100 Most Often Mispronounced Words and Phrases in English

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

Some samples from the site are below. Take a look, it’s pretty interesting….

athelete, atheletic athlete, athletic Two syllables are enough for “athlete.”
Calvary cavalry It isn’t clear why we say, ”Mind your Ps and Qs” when we have more difficulty keeping up with our Ls and Rs. Had there been a cavalry in Jesus’ time, perhaps Calvary would not have been so tragic.

Etymologically Speaking

Curious about the words’ origins?

Cerveza (Spanish) Beer
This term, which means “beer” in Spanish, originally came from the medieval French word cervoise. For its part, the French term origianlly stemmed from the Gallo-Roman (that is, ancient French-Latin dialect) word cerevisia, which was used in honor of Ceres, the Roman goddess of the harvest. It is interesting to note that just about the time that the Spanish were adopting the term cerveza (aroung 1482), the French started to drop cervoise in favor of the term biere– from the Germanic term Bier (from the Latin biber, “to drink”), which was the term that was more popular in northern Europe, where the climate was more favorable to the production of the grains that were used to make the beverage. [(A footnote: the reader might be wondering what term was used in Spain before the adoption of cerveza. Before 1482, the inhabitants of the Iberian Peninsula had used the completely-unrelated ancient Iberian word ceria or celia, meaning "fermented wheat.")(Footnote #2: The English term ale comes from the Scandinavian term for beer, oel. Although oel collectively refers to all types of beer, you beer purists out there know that the English term ale came to refer only to beer produced using the "top" fermentation process. Beer produced using the "bottom" fermentation process is called lager.)].

Follow a Purple Bike or a Donkey ?

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

You may have heard about Yahoo! craze about the purple stuff. If you have not, take a peek at pimped up purple bikes, purple outfits).

There are 20 bikes across the globe that take a picture every 60 seconds while in motion - then the photo is tagged with GPS info, uploaded to Flickr and plotted on a map. You can see the world through the cameras of of those bikes and their riders -let’s call them the YRiders - via the Maplication tool on purplepedals.com.

That’s cool. Very cool indeed.

But there is something way way cooler, imho.

How about following a Donkey around Amsterdam ? Yet better read the blog of its adventures. I have no idea what Asino blogs about, perhaps it’s in Donkeyish, or in Dutch, same difference to me. It’s very entertaining see a Donkey’s eye (or DRiders) view of Amsterdam.

This ?

Asino and Christian

or this ?

I love the bikes, but come on… You can’t beat the donkey :)

Happy Tree Friends, NOT !

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

Obviously those people are not Happy Tree Friends.

Whoever cutting those trees down should stop immediately, so our environmentalist friends can stop making videos like that.  Please stop killing the trees, and help those people out of their misery. Forget about the environment, pollution, end of the world etc. Do it for the sake of silencing them.

iMia for iPhone is Out, and It is AWESOME

Sunday, August 10th, 2008

Another cool gadget from Brilaps just hit the wires.

iMia is a web application focused on bringing a standard iPhone web interface to the MiaCMS, Mambo, and Joomla! content management systems. Yes, the iPhone does have a full web browser that is capable of displaying any site, so it is possible to use these content management systems without iMia. However, the experience is often less than appealing since users must constantly zoom in, zoom out, pinch to expand and contract, etc. As with most web sites and/or applications, these content management systems were coded with the desktop browser in mind. This is were iMia comes in…

iMia brings a simple web interface to the MiaCMS, Mambo, and Joomla! content management systems for iPhone users. The application is designed in accordance with the recommended iPhone interface design guidelines laid out by Apple. iMia makes use of the iui project’s fabulous efforts in this area.

Profanity in Open Source

Saturday, September 8th, 2007

I recently received an email from one of registered users of the ocszone.com

The email follows;

from a user….
At Joomla Extensions it is said that moseasymedia is free, but here at your download you demand credit card details and want to chargeThis is bull shitI’ll fucken tell everyone I can about your con

fucken piece of shit

This email is obviously from someone who does not know what GPL means. Indeed, let me rephrase; from someone who does not know how to read.

ocszone.com clearly states - in multiple places- that the software we develop and distribute is free of charge unless stated otherwise. Most of those notices are in different colors and bold, so that they will be eye-catchy. And we do NOT demand any private and financial information.

Severus Snape: The Unlikely Hero of Harry Potter book 7

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

I didn’t bother reading this article, but the lovers of the Harry Potter boy may find this interesting.

By Dave Kopel

Don’t read the rest of this article unless you’ve finished Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. The predictions for book 7 will necessarily involve the revelation of some important plot details from book 6.
